Feast of Saint Mary of Egypt
April 1 is the feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt, one of the most fascinating figures in Christian hagiography. Her journey from a life of prostitution to becoming a penitent saint has captured the imagination of the faithful for centuries, both in the East and the West, and has inspired numerous works of art.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, around 344, she died in Palestine in 421. She lived for 47 years in the Palestinian desert in complete solitude, surviving on only three loaves of bread. Over time, her hair grew to cover her body after her clothes had worn away. The Catholic, Orthodox and Coptic Churches venerate her as a saint.
