The Association of Lay Missionary Action (Alma) was founded on 8 September 1960 in Madiun, Indonesia, by the Lazarist Fr Paulus Hendrikus Janssen and began its work in Timor-Leste on 14 October 2004. Inspired by the charism of being close to the poor, the disabled and the abandoned, it provides assistance to children with physical and mental disabilities. In addition to providing therapy sessions and treatments several times a week, it helps the families of the children along a journey of acceptance of their children's conditions, an great opportunity in a country which has so many children, and where, not everyone has access to medical care.
