Church in Australia mourns late Cardinal Pell

Church leaders in Australia have paid tribute to Cardinal George Pell, remembering his deep faith and “strong and clear leadership” within the Catholic Church in Australia. “Cardinal Pell was a very significant and influential Church leader, both in Australia and internationally”, and was “deeply committed to Christian discipleship”, said Archbishop of Melbourne Peter Comensoli in a statement. He “led the local Church of Melbourne from 1996 to 2001 with strong leadership in the Catholic faith and with good governance”. Archbishop Anthony Colin Fisher of Sydney recalled the late Cardinal’s episcopal motto, ‘Be Not Afraid’. “Through good days and bad, he lived up to these words as a man of courage and with a big heart, who trusted in divine providence”.
