Blessed Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos

On  December 10, Pope Francis beatified Isabel Cristina Mrad Campos, a young lay faithful, killed in hatred of the Faith September 1, 1982 in Jiuz de Fora (Brazil). She was just 20 years old when she was killed. Her dream was to become a paediatrician. She was part of the Youth Group of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

That evening, her brother returned home to find her murdered, with signs of attempted sexual assault. At the trial, Maurílio Almeida Oliveira, who attempted to rape her, was found guilty of the murder. Isabel, whom they compared in Brazil to Maria Goretti, resisted the attack. The defendant was sentenced to 19 years in prison, but has always denied being the perpetrator of the murder. After several years in prison, he escaped, and remains a fugitive to date. Some of his relatives claim he is deceased.
