Beatification of Sr. Maria Carola Cecchin

On November 5, in Meru, Kenya, Sister Maria Carola Cecchin (1877-1925), baptismal name Fiorina, of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo, missionary in this African country, was beatified. Feeling unwell, she embarked nonetheless to return home on October 25, 1925 on the steamer “Porto di Alessandretta”, became increasingly unwell and died November 13. She is “buried in the waves” of the Red Sea, between Massawa and Suez.

World Day against Violence against Women

November 25 is the World Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The UN established that day in 1999 in memory of the Mirabal sisters, killed in 1960 in Santo Domingo because they opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. In many countries, the color displayed on this day is red and one of the symbolic objects are red women’s shoes, lined up in squares or in public places.
