On Friday, 24 September, during the celebration of Holy Mass for First Nations leaders and parish representatives at the Santa Teresa Spirituality Centre in Ormiston, Queensland, Archbishop Mark Coleridge, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, publicly endorsed the “Uluru Statement from the Heart”, which demands a constitutional voice for Australia’s indigenous peoples, recognizing that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the first sovereign Nations of the continent. Speaking ahead of the first assembly of the Plenary Council of the Church in Australia, scheduled to begin on 3 October in Adelaide, the Archbishop of Brisbane said that “only a heart of stone” could allow indigenous peoples “to become aliens, exiles, and refugees in their own land”.
