Home at last. The beautiful and long-awaited news that Pope Francis had returned to Santa Marta after leaving Rome’s Gemelli Hospital was announced by Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni on Wednesday morning, 14 July. After leaving the hospital where he had been staying for ten days, at 10:30 am, the Holy Father travelled by car to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to pray before the icon of Salus Populi Romani to thank Our Lady for the successful outcome of his surgery and to pray for all the sick, in particular for all those he had met during his hospital stay. He arrived at Santa Marta shortly before noon.

Pope Francis also expressed his gratitude to all those who had wished him well during his hospitalization, in a tweet: “I thank all those who have been close to me with prayer and affection during my hospital stay. Let us not forget to pray for the sick and for those who assist them”.
