07 July 2025

In a telegram sent on his behalf by Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin for the 2025 Day for Life, jointly observed on 15 June by the Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, Pope Leo XIV expressed his spiritual closeness to all participants and encouraged them to bear witness to the dignity of life: “Through your common witness to the God-given dignity of every person, without exception, and to the tender Christ-like accompaniment of the seriously ill, all in society will be encouraged to defend rather than undermine a civilization founded on authentic love and genuine compassion”.

Addressed to Lead Bishop for Life Issues for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Archbishop John Sherrington of Liverpool, the telegram highlighted that the mystery of suffering “can be transformed by grace into an experience of the Lord’s presence, for God is always close to those who are suffering”. The Pope entrusted participants’ efforts “to the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel” and imparted his Apostolic Blessing upon them.
