Pope Francis’ health is improving as he remains in hospital for treatment for viral bronchitis requiring the administration of antibiotics by infusion. The Director of the Holy See Press Office Mr Matteo Bruni revealed that the treatment has “resulted in a marked improvement” in the Pope’s “state of health”, and that the Holy Father should be discharged on Saturday, 1 April, in time for the celebration of Holy Mass in Saint Peter’s Square on Palm Sunday. On Thursday morning, after breakfast, the Pope read some newspapers and resumed work. He then prayed in a private chapel and received the Eucharist. In the evening, he had pizza for dinner with those tending to him during his stay at the hospital.

On Wednesday afternoon, 29 March, the Pope went to Rome’s Gemelli hospital for some scheduled check-ups, though he had complained of some respiratory difficulties in recent days. Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer.
