The share of US universities among the world’s top 100 is declining, while the share of universities from East Asia and the Middle East is increasing. The figure emerges from the 19th edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published on 12 October; educational factors, cultural logic, and (also) geopolitical consequences. The axis of the world seems to be shifting, without a precise direction, keeping its focus. South Korea holds three positions in the world ranking of the top 100 universities. Also of interest is the restructuring of the South Korean university system due to falling birth rates: while between 2015 and 2018 the government had imposed reduced admission quotas to universities in remote areas of the country, recently these changes have also affected other places such as the capital Seoul.
