Fr Michel Fédou, sj , and jurist, Prof. Joseph Halevi Horowitz Weiler, are the recipients of the 2022 Ratzinger prize. The recognition, awarded each year by the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation “to scholars that have stood out for their scientific research in the theological field” will be conferred by Pope Francis on 1 December in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace.

Born in Lyon France in 1952, Fr Fédou has been a professor of dogmatic and patristic theology since 1987 at the Jesuit Centre Sèvres in Paris, where he later served as Dean of the Faculty of Theology and then President of the Centre. He served as member of various theological associations and commissions for ecumenical dialogue with Lutherans and Orthodox. He has written several works, especially in the patristic and Christology fields.

Weiler was born in 1951 and has been a law professor in several universities and institutes in the United States (New York, Harvard), as well as in Britain and various parts of the world. He has served as president of the European University Institute in Florence. Jewish by faith, he has written considerably about constitutional, international and European law, and human rights. He is known for having defended Italy at the European Court of Human Rights in the case on crucifixes in schools. He received a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the Catholic University of America.
