Upon learning of the death of Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, ofm, Archbishop emeritus of Seville, of the Title of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli, on Wednesday, 27 April, Pope Francis expressed his condolences in a telegram addressed to Archbishop Josep Ángel Saiz Meneses of Seville, Spain. The following is a translation of the Pope’s telegram which was written in Spanish, accompanied by a brief biography of the late Cardinal.

On receiving the news of the death of Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, ofm, Archbishop emeritus of Seville, I express my condolences to His Excellency, to the clergy, consecrated and lay faithful of this particular Church, as well as to his brothers in the Order of Friars Minor, to his relatives and to the Church of Tangier, where he also served as pastor.

Likewise, remembering this devoted prelate who for years and with fidelity gave his life to the service of God and the Church, I offer up prayers for the eternal rest of his soul, so that the Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Our Lady of Montserrat, may grant him the Crown of Glory that does not fade. And, as a sign of Christian hope in the risen Lord, I impart the Apostolic Blessing.

Francis
