A number of Ukrainian families fleeing the war gathered at Casa Santa Marta to see the Pope off as he embarked on his Apostolic visit to Malta on Saturday, 2 April. Before leaving his residence for Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, Pope Francis met with refugees being hosted by the Community of Sant’Egidio. Cardinal Krajewski accompanied the group, which included a 37-year-old mother who travelled from Lviv with her two daughters, ages seven and five; a pair of sisters-in-law with four kids, between 10 and 17 years old; and a family of six from Kyiv: mother and father, their three children, ages 16, 10 and eight, and their 75-year-old grandmother.
