Cardinal Agostino Cacciavillan passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 5 March, in his residence at the Vatican. He was 95 years. In a message of condolence sent to the Cardinal’s sister, Pope Francis remembered how, with “exemplary dedication and sharpness of thought”, the Cardinal had generously used “the many talents he received for the good of the Church”. Cardinal Cacciavillan carried out his service to the Vatican with “great competence, untiring self-sacrifice and jovial openness of spirit”, the Holy Father said.
The funeral Mass was celebrated by the Dean of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re on Monday, 7 March, at the Altar of the Chair in Saint Peter’s Basilica. At the end of the Mass, Pope Francis presided at the rite of the Ultima commendatio and valedictio.
