During the General Audience on Wednesday, 19 January, Pope Francis turned his thoughts to the inhabitants of the Tonga Islands, who have been hit by a devastating tsunami set off by the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano. The following is a translation of his appeal.

My thoughts go to the people of the islands of Tonga, who have been affected in recent days by the eruption of an underwater volcano, that caused enormous material damage. I am spiritually close to all the people affected, imploring God for relief for their suffering. I invite everyone to join me in praying for these brothers and sisters.
