The liturgy of the Church offers us the opportunity to pause calmly, once again, before the mystery of the Child of Bethlehem, the Word of God made flesh. And it does so by inviting us to listen to the Prologue of the Gospel according to John: one of the jewels of Christian contemplation. Let us try to pause for a while in front of the Nativity scene we have lovingly made at home or in the church and simply gaze in wonder at the Child Jesus. In this small Child wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying on a bed of straw in a lowly manger, and yet in this scene of humility we are invited to see the Glory of God and the grace that brings salvation which has now appeared! How can such a wonder be possible? What would we give to be given the same eyes of Mary and Joseph, who cannot stop themselves gazing in awe at Jesus their beloved child. ...
