On Sunday, 10 October, “before the celebration of the Holy Mass for the Opening of the Synod of Bishops, the Pope greeted the recently freed Colombian sister, Gloria Cecilia Narvaez”, Director of the Holy See Press Office Matteo Bruni said in a statement. Working as a missionary in the country, Sister Gloria, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate, was taken hostage on 7 February 2017 in southern Mali near the border with Burkina Faso, along with Italian priest, Father Pierluigi Maccalli, and Italian businessman, Nicola Chiaccio, both of whom were freed one year ago. Mali’s presidency had announced Sister Gloria’s release on Saturday, 9 October, with a statement on the presidential Twitter account paying tribute to her “courage and bravery”.
