The UN Human Rights Council has received a report on the “risk of genocide” to which the indigenous peoples of Brazil and other Latin American countries are exposed. “In the region of the Americas, I am particularly concerned about the situation of indigenous peoples”, stated Alice Wairimu Nderitu, UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. “In Brazil, Ecuador and other countries, I call on governments to protect communities at risk and ensure accountability for the crimes committed”, she added in her remarks at the 47th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 28 June.
