The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, celebrated each year on 9 August, is an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of Indigenous peoples and their place in our societies. Indigenous peoples account for 6.2 per cent of the global population, present in over 90 countries. In Australia, there are around 800,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the original custodians of our land, speaking over 100 different Indigenous languages. The 2021 theme for the International Day is ‘Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract’. The statistics are confronting. Indigenous peoples are nearly three times as likely to be living in extreme poverty compared to their non-indigenous counterparts.
