Upon learning of the death on Sunday, 11 July of Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, Metropolitan Archbishop emeritus of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pope Francis expressed his condolences in a telegram addressed to Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, ofm cap., of Kinshasa. On Tuesday morning, 20 July, an open-air solemn funeral took place on the Esplanade Du Palais Du Peuple Rdc. The following is a translation of the Pope’s telegram which was written in French, accompanied by a brief biography of the late Cardinal. Having learned with sadness of the death of Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, Archbishop emeritus of Kinshasa, I send my deepest condolences to you and to his family, to the Auxiliary Bishops and to the faithful of the dioceses of Inongo, Kisangani and Kinshasa, of which he was successively pastor.
