A book by Msgr. Georg Ratzinger

My Brother, the Pope

Mein Bruder, der Papst (My Brother, the Pope) is the simple and effective title of the book in German which Mons. Georg Ratzinger has compiled together with the German journalist and writer, Michael Hesemann. The 256 pages are the product of a series of conversations in late Spring this year at Regensburg, during which Benedict XVI’s elder brother recounted to his interviewer the memories of an entire life. Mein Bruder, der Papst published in Munich by Herbig and accompanied by some 40 pictures, will be on sale in bookstores in Germany from 12 September, the eve of the Holy Father’s visit to Germany.

The book was written on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Georg and Joseph Ratzinger (in Freising, 29 June 1951), an unusual anniversary which the two brothers celebrated together in the Vatican Basilica on the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul. The account of Mons. Georg Ratzinger, who is the person closest to Benedict XVI, begins with the years of their childhood. It recounts, among other things, how it was in the bosom of the family that young Joseph’s decision to serve the Church through priesthood was born and matured, and it continues to the years of his Pontificate.
