The Pope's trilogy on the life of Jesus is now complete
The new book of Joseph Ratzinger-Benedetto XVI, The Infancy Narratives , was launched at the Vatican on Tuesday, 20 November. Published in Italian by Rizzoli and by Libreria Editrice Vaticana, the book is available in English from Image Books and simultaneously in seven other languages (German, Brazilian, Croatian, French, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish), printed in 50 countries with more than a million copies in the first edition. In the coming months, this book — the last in the trilogy on Jesus of Nazareth — will be translated into another 20 languages for publication in 72 countries. The volume was presented to Benedict XVI by the publishers whom he received in audience.
Introducing the third and last “panel” of the “triptych”, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, presented the almost cinematographic technique of anticipation with which Benedict xvi begins his book: “in the ‘antechamber’ he voices a question that will echo in the face of the Roman praetor of Jerusalem, when the governor Pilate was to question the accused, Jesus. Póthen ei s y; “Where are you from?” (Jn 19:9). According to Ravasi, Ratzinger proposes four keys for understanding the Infancy narratives. “The first and principal” one is the interaction between “history and faith”, then between “history and prophecy”. The third key is the dialogue between the author and the reader, while the last key is the “linguistic method”.
