On Thursday, 16 September, Benedict XVI departed from Castel Gandolfo on his 17th Apostolic Visit which was also an Official State Visit to the United Kingdom. After a three-hour flight he arrived at the International Airport of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The Welcome Ceremony did not take place at the airport but at the Royal Palace of Holyroodhouse where the Holy Father was greeted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth ii of the United Kingdom, with her consort, H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Also present were members of the Royal Family and civil and political authorities of Scotland. The Pope gave the  Welcome Address in response to the Queen's greeting.
