St Teresa speaks to Asia

Il Carmel of the future is called to offer instruments that correspond to the thirst for God that exists in Asia today. Carmelite spirituality has immense possibilities for responding to this thirst and for leading people to deepen their relationship with God: this is what emerged from the congress “St Teresa speaks to Asia”, organized by the Discalced Carmelites of India in preparation for the fifth centenary of the saint’s birth. Held in Bangalore, more than 500 Carmelite delegates from different parts of the world took part. All communities of apostolic life and contemplative religious life, Carmelite religious and lay or Third Order Carmelites – it was declared at the end of the work – must commit themselves to the task of “living a spiritual experience that is both evangelical and profound”. Starting with this experience, in sharing, in acceptance and in the creation of centres and institutes of spirituality, “the Carmel of the future will be able to offer a high-quality service to the Church in Asia”. On the vast continent of Asia the Carmelite religious are called “to involve themselves in an open dialogue with the great non-Christian religious, especially in the field of spirituality”. To reach this end, the Indian Carmelites conclude, it will be necessary to seek new forms of prayer, of inner life and of communities that are more consonant with the Oriental mentality.
