Six new Saints on 17 October

On Friday morning, 19 February, Pope Benedict xvi held an Ordinary Public Consistory for voting on the Canonization Causes of Bl. Stanis³aw So³tys (Kazimierczyk), a priest of the Canons Regular of the Lateran; Bl. André (Alfred) Bessette, a religious of the Congregation of the Holy Cross; Bl. Cándida María de Jesús (Juana Josefa) Cipitria y Barriola, virgin, Foundress of the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus; Bl. Mary of the Cross (Mary Helen) MacKillop, virgin, Foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart; Bl. Giulia Salzano, virgin, Foundress of the Congregation of Sisters Catechists of the Sacred Heart; Bl. Battista (Camilla) Varano, virgin, nun of the Order of St Clare.

The Pope arrived at about 11:00 a.m. in the Consistory Hall where 37 Cardinals had gathered, including Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, as well as about 30 Bishops, including Archbishop Fernando Filoni, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with the States.

At the beginning of the celebration of the Hour of Sext the Pontiff introduced the subjects to be discussed. After the chanting of the Psalms 118, 132 and 139, concluding with the proclamation of the “Lectio brevis” from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 3:12b; 14a, Archbishop Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presented the Causes of Canonization with brief biographical outlines of the six Blesseds.

The Pope then asked those present for their opinion.

After the voting the Holy Father decided that the six Blesseds would be canonized on Sunday, 17 October. Benedict xvi then led the prayer for the Church, invoking the presence of the Trinity on the life of the People of God and ending with the singing of the Pater Noster .

Lastly the Pope imparted the Apostolic Blessing to those present.

Finally, Bishop Guido Marini, Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations asked Mons. Nicolas Henry Marie Denis Thevenin, Protonotary Apostolic, to draw up the public document recording the event.
