Cubans who make a pilgrimage to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre Shrine often bring flowers. On Monday evening, 21 September, just a few hours after arriving in Santiago de Cuba — his last stop on the Caribbean island — the Pope participated in this tradition. And like a simple pilgrim he brought a bouquet of flowers and a silver vase with 12 ceramic white and yellow roses with silver stems.
The Pontiff invited all the bishops of the island to this moment of prayer with the hope that this Marian stop may bring about a revival of popular devotion to Our Lady at the beginning of the Jubilee for the centenary of the proclamation of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre the Patroness of Cuba. The Jubilee officially began on Tuesday, 22 September.
