Pregnancy in Yucatán

In the cycle of sickness and poverty, pregnancy in adolescence remains one of the main causes of maternal and infantile mortality in Yucatán, according to what we read in the Maternal and Postnatal Health Programme of the Mexican State Health Services. The social and economic repercussions of the phenomenon are serious, because the girls are forced to leave school and have fewer opportunities for finding dignified work. In an attempt to limit precocious pregnancies, the state health services have committed themselves to implementing strategies aimed at prevention and at assistance for the adolescents. Their success remains to be seen.
