Pope receives French President

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI received in Audience H.E. Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic, on Friday morning, 8 October, at the Apostolic Palace.

The President then met Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State of His Holiness, who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

The cordial conversations focused on topics of international politics, such as the peace process in the Middle East, the situation of Christians in various countries and the expansion of representation of the world's regions in the multilateral organizations. The importance of the ethical and social dimensions of economic problems was also emphasized, in the perspective proposed by the Encyclical Caritas in Veritate.

After a reference to the Holy Father's Apostolic visit to Lourdes and to Paris in 2009, and President Sarkozy's visit the previous year, the reciprocal desire to maintain a permanent dialogue at various institutional levels and to continue to collaborate constructively in issues of common concern was reaffirmed.
