Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI had lunch together on Friday morning, 27 December, in the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
Pope Francis had invited his Predecessor to eat with him while he was visiting Benedict and wishing him a Happy Christmas on 23 December. Present at the lunch on Friday were also their respective Secretaries; Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States; and Msgr Peter Bryan Wells, Assessor for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State. Their meeting last Monday (pictured here) lasted 45 minutes.
Benedict XVI welcomed Pope Francis at the entrance of his residence. After praying for a short time together in the chapel, they met privately. Then Pope Francis, accompanied by his secretaries, greeted the members of Benedict XVI’s family.
