Pope expresses condolences on Sheikh Tantawi's death

On learning of the death of the Grand Imam and Sheikh of the University of Al-Azhar, Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, sent a telegram to Sheikh Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Wasil who currently heads the university. In the Pope's Message “sincere and fervent condolences are expressed” to the community of Al-Azhar and to the family of Sheikh Tantawi, whom the Pope recalls as “an eminent religious leader, an esteemed partner in the dialogue between Muslims and Catholics”. Sheikh Tantawi was 81 years old.
