For peace
and for creation

· The Russian Orthodox Primate in Antarctica and in Latin America ·

Santiago del Cile, 19. “When I blessed the water, I thought about all the land that is below us, and I prayed for God's creation. I prayed for all those who work here and for their country, for their people and for the entire world.” These are the final words of Kirill's address which came at the end of his surprise visit at the Russian Station Bellingshausen, in Antarctica, where he celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Holy Trinity, a small wooden church built on the island of Waterloo. The Patriarch of Russia presided at the blessing of water and praying in suffrage of the polar explorers.

This is the first time an Orthodox primate has visited Antarctica. This was an unscheduled stop on the Patriarch's visit to Latin America. In addition to meeting Pope Francis in Cuba, Kirill also visited Paraguay, Chile and Brazil.
