Paths of peace

· The logo of the papal visit to Georgia ·

Pax vobis is the motto of the Pope’s visit to Georgia and Azerbaijan, which will take place from 30 September to 2 October. The two words, taken from Chapter 20 of the Gospel of John, are represented in two languages — Latin and Georgian — on the logo of the visit.

The choice of peace as the theme, was to emphasize the coincidence of this trip with the Year of Mercy, and serves as an appeal for peace in the world and particularly in that region.

Announcing the visit on 30 June, Pope Francis indicated the objectives of the trip: “to highlight the ancient Christian roots present in those lands — always in a spirit of dialogue with the other religions and cultures — and also to foster hope and paths of peace”. The logo of the trip to Georgia depicts a stylized cross resembling the traditional cross of St Nino, the saint who converted the country to Christianity. The yellow and red colours represent the state flags of Vatican City and of Georgia.
