There is an innovation in the June 2013 isue of Women Church World : the cover design by Isabella Ducrot portrays a man, Óscar Romero, the bishop killed while he was celebrating Mass in San Salvador on 24 March 1980 and the process of whose beatification is under way. Romero's portrait pays tribute to his words – that are recorded for us, in the section on spirituality, by the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family – in honour of motherhood, of the role of women as mothers. It is a tribute to one who considered the gift of life so highly that he wrote that women, "with the simplicity of maternal martyrdom, conceive a child in their womb, give birth to him, feed him, bring him up and care for him with love. It is giving life. It is martyrdom". These words are not so different from those that Pope Francis often speaks in his daily homilies.
From the very first issue of the insert we said that we were open to male collaboration on condition that the men talked about women. This time there are three authors of articles of major importance, as proof of how our openness is beginning to produce fertile results. "Perhaps", as Lucetta Scaraffia concludes in her article in this issue, "it is only women who accept profoundly the role of motherhood who are not afraid of confronting and collaborating with men, for they are well aware of their invincible difference.
