Next February Pope Francis will create new cardinals

· On the Feast of the Chair of St Peter ·

Regarding the news which has been circulated in recent days, that a consistory for the creation of new cardinals will be held next February, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, has released the information we publish below.

At the beginning of October, on the occasion of the meeting of the Council of Cardinals (1-3 October) and of the Council of the Synod of Bishops (7-8 October), Pope Francis informed the participants of his intention to convene a consistory for the creation of new cardinals on the occasion of the Feast of the Chair of St Peter (22 February).

The Pope wished to communicate his decision to convene a consistory in a timely manner, in order to facilitate the scheduling of the other meetings in which the cardinals from the various parts of the world will have to participate. It is expected, in fact, that Pope Francis will precede the consistory with a meeting of the College of Cardinals, as his predecessors have done at other times.

Prior to this meeting - which is scheduled for 17 and 18 February – the third meeting of the Council of Cardinals will also take place, while immediately following the Consistory, on 24 and 25 February, the Council of the Synod of Bishops shall assemble. And as in years past, it is expected that the next meeting of the Council of Cardinals for the Study of Organizational and Economic Questions of the Holy See will also be held in February, probably during the week preceding the consistory.
