Mother Land

· The Fourth Congress of the International Catholic Rural Association ·

The first and principal factor of development in the agricultural and rural world is the proclamation of Christ and also for this reason “a new evangelization” is necessary in the farming environment so that “people who farm the land may encounter the Saviour”.  From the life of communion with Jesus, in fact, “will come a new light and new moral energy, essential for development”. This is the conviction that emerged at the end of the Fourth World Congress on Rural Life, recently organized in Rome by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and by the International Catholic Rural Association (ICRA).

The paths of pastoral and educational work that developed from the discussion were illustrated by Bishop Mario Toso, Secretary of the Dicastery, after Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President, had introduced the congress, recalling in particular that “those in rural life make a vital contribution to the integral human development of all humankind; at the same time, those in rural life want opportunities to develop integrally themselves, their families and their communities”.
