La festa della Madonna di Caacupé in Paraguay

“The family is the centre and guides the integral growth of the human person: our authorities must understand this”. Msgr Claudio Giménez Medina, Bishop of Caacupé, Paraguay, said this in his homily to thousands of the faithful who thronged the square in front of the basilica on 8 December, the last day of the feast of Nuestra Señora de Caacupé, the country’s Patroness. All the national authorities took part in the celebration, including Mr Horacio Cartes, President of the Republic. Bishop Giménez, the Agency Fides said, was unable to refrain from mentioning the recent political and social situation: “Thanks be to God indignation is being felt in various sectors of the population, in order to press for justice, and it has had surprising results”. He then asked that indignation at the violence perpetrated also be expressed. “In Paraguay there are evils detrimental to families that must be urgently dealt with, including corruption”, Bishop Giménez said, asking people to reject recommendations and nepotism. “Transparency and honesty are not empty words but must be practised by every consistent person” he added, expressing his profound regret that Paraguay continues to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
