· The Pope at the concert on his birthday ·
“A great hymn of praise to God” and an occasion to give thanks to “God in a special way once again for my years of life and ministry”. Thus Benedict XVI experienced the intense interpretation of Symphony No. 2 “ Lobgesang” by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, on Friday afternoon, 20 April, in the Paul VI Hall. The concert was performed by the MDR Radio Choir and Gewandhaus of Orchestra and Choir of Leipzig and conducted by Riccardo Chailly. “Music as praise of God, the supreme Beauty”, the Pope said at the end of the concert, “is at the root of Mendelssohn’s composition and not only of his liturgical or sacred music but of the whole of his opus”.
