The greatest treasure

· In Manila the Pope denounced injustice and corruption with the invitation to protect the family ·

The family is the “greatest treasure” of a country. From the stage of the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, immersed in thousands of enthusiastic parents and children, Pope Francis once again spoke about the strength of this truth, recalling that the “future of humanity passes through the family”.

On Friday, 16 January, the first whole day that the Pope had spent in the Philippines — where he arrived on Thursday, 15 January — culminated with the festive meeting of families in the modern sports centre of the capital city. Francis gave an extended address in English and Spanish, often speaking off-the-cuff. His discourse was met with much applause several times. Do not lose the ability to dream, he said, also encouraging marriage and underlining the necessity to nourish always love by praying together: “The family that prays together, stays together”, he assured.

Earlier in the day, the Pope met with the Authorities of the country and celebrated Mass in the Cathedral. There the Pope emphasized the need to build “a society respectful of authentic human values” and to be attentive to “voice of the poor”, calling for reform of the social structures and “to reject every form of corruption which diverts resources from the poor”. Then at Mass, the Holy Father invited Christians, in particular, to give voice to honesty and solidarity in order to remove the causes of inequality and injustice.
