“I am beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God”. In just a few words Pope Francis introduced himself on Instagram late Saturday morning, 19 March. And in just a few hours, @Franciscus had more than 1.5 million followers on the popular social network. As was widely covered in the media, the Holy Father joined Instagram on the liturgical feast of St Joseph which coincided with the third anniversary of his pontificate.
After ordaining two bishops in the Vatican Basilica, Francis took his liturgical vestments off and went to the Domus Santa Marta, where Msgr Lucio Adrian Ruiz, Secretary of the Secretariat for Communications, and Kevin Systrom, cofounder and CEO of Instagram, were waiting for him.
Smiling, the Pontiff read the prepared Italian text and then with one click posted a video. Almost simultaneously the first images of L’Osservatore Romano Photographic Service appeared. And as the photo of the Pope praying circled the globe, his account received “likes” in every language.
