On All Souls Day, Pope Francis prayed at the tombs of his Predecessors in St Peter’s Basilica. At 6 pm on Monday afternoon, 2 November, the Pope entered the Vatican Grottos, where he led the prayer in suffrage of the Pontiffs. Scripture and song accompanied the celebration, whose participants included Cardinal Angelo Comastri, Archpriest of the Basilica, Bishop Vittorio Lanzani, Delegate of the Fabric of St Peter, Msgr Leonardo Sapienza, Regent of the Prefecture of the Papal Household, Msgr Yoannis Lahzi Gaid and Fr Ján Dubina, among others. Directing the rite was Msgr Pier Enrico Stefanetti, Papal Master of Ceremonies. At the conclusion the Pope prayed before the tombs of his Predecessors John Paul I, Bl. Paul VI, Pius XII, Pius XI and Benedict XV, also pausing in meditation before the Clementine Chapel.
