Fifty seven propositiones presented

Cardinal Bertone announces that the Synod delegation's mission to Syria will be post-poned given the “seriousness of the situation”

The delegation that Benedict XVI had arranged to send to Syria  — to express, on his behalf and that of the Synod of Bishops, solidarity and closeness to the people of the nation — will most likely depart until after the Synod and the members participating will also change. It was Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, at the opening of the 19th General Congregation, held this morning, Tuesday, 23 October, to announce this in the presence of the Pope.

After Cardinal Bertone's intervention, Archbishop Eterović, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, expressed his solidarity to priests and to the Christians of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the abduction of three missionaries - Augustinians of the Assumption - which took place in the region of  Butembo, in the north eastern part of the country. The prelate joined in the appeal launched by the episcopal conference of the African country for their release.

Then Archbishop Eterović introduced the work of the Assembly stating that there were 326 propositiones , reduced to 57 after careful examination. Cardinal Wuerl, Relator General, and Archbishop Carré, Special Secretary, read in Latin the list of propositiones , which were subdivided into four sections.
