The face of service

· The Cardinal Secretary of State ordains the new Nuncio in Belarus ·

A bishop’s authority must have the face of service, particularly in order “to promote the unity of the Church and the enhancement of everyone’s charisms and talents”. This was stated by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, on the occasion of the episcopal ordination of Apostolic Nuncio Gábor Pintér, which took place in the Hungarian Cathedral of Vác on Friday, 15 July.

Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, and Bishop Miklós Beer, Ordinary of Vác, also took part in the consecration of the new Nuncio, who was appointed by Pope Francis on 13 May as titular Archbishop of Velebusdo and as papal representative in Belarus.

In his homily, Cardinal Parolin emphasized that authority within the Church is founded on love. The truth of this statement emerges from the fact that between Christ and the disciple there is a close bond of love which is “strengthened every day in prayer and pastoral charity”, and which prevents authority from “transforming into tyranny or from turning away, for love of stillness, from the real problems that the Church and individual believers face”. For this reason, the Cardinal added, only the love of Christ and the mystery of mercy can inspire “the right way to exercise authority within the Church”. In this way, a pastor’s action will be marked by gentleness and firmness, by authority and benevolence, as well as kindness and responsibility”.
