Europe urgently needs a new evangelization

· The Pope's Message to Bishops' Conferences ·

Against the background of social and spiritual challenges, the Church in Europe is called “to reflect on the perennial task of evangelization and on its current new urgency”. One reads this in the message that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, sent on behalf of Benedict XVI to the Plenary Assembly of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences. The meeting, which is taking place in Switzerland, fits into the context of the celebrations for the 1,400th anniversary of the arrival of St Gall. In the message the hope is expressed that on the eve of the Synod on the New Evangelization  the memory of St Gall and of his work will be an incentive “to look with faith and hope at the great “harvest”, formed by the peoples of Europe, in the wake of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council and the teaching of the Supreme Pontiffs who implemented it”.
