Ecumenism of suffering

· Pope Francis receives His Holiness Tawadros II head of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt ·

“Just as the blood of the martyrs was a seed of strength and fertility for the Church, so too the sharing of daily sufferings can become an effective instrument of unity”. Pope Francis said this to His Holiness Tawadros II, Pope Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark, on Monday morning, 10 May. This day marked the 40th anniversary of the historic meeting of Paul VI and Shenouda III, a visit that “strengthens the bonds of friendship and brotherhood that already exist between the See of Peter and the See of Mark”, Pope Francis said. Even if the path ahead may prove to be long, the Pontiff said he was “ convinced that – under the guidance of the Holy Spirit – our persevering prayer, our dialogue and the will to build communion day by day in mutual love will allow us to take important further steps towards full unity”. For his part, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt proposed that 10 May be dedicated every year to the celebration of love between the two Churches.
