The Archdiocese of New York has announced the opening of the canonical inquiry – a collection of testimonies on the life and works of the “Servant of God, Dorothy Day” to be presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican – in order to decide on her “heroic virtues” and to declare her “Venerable”. This is necessary for Day’s beatification and canonization in accordance with the traditional process. In the year 2000, at the request of Cardinal John O’Connor, the Vatican pronounced its “nihil obstat” [no impediment] and Dorothy Day was declared a Servant of God.
