· Cardinal Nichols returns after visiting the refugees in the camps in Erbil ·
Following his recent visit to Kurdistan, Cardinal Vincent Gerard Nichols spoke to Vatican Radio about meeting refugees in the camps in Erbil.
The refugees, the Archbishop of Westminster noted, are being supported “in a manner which does not remove their dignity” or make them dependent, but helps them to move from their traumatic experiences to taking responsibility and making plans for the future. The President of the episcopal conference met with Christians who have recently been forced to flee from Baghdad and the Plain of Nineveh due to the advance of the Islamic State. In total, 120,000 men, women and children found shelter, first in makeshift camps and now in more stable containers or rented housing.
