The Church rejuvenates

· Letter from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ·

It would be a mistake to oppose a Church “of charity” to a Church “of the institution,” for “charistmatic gifts” and the “hierarchical gifts” proceed from the same Spirit and are “given to contribute, in diverse ways, to the edification of the Church”. On Tuesday morning, 14 June, the Letter from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith entitled, Iuvenescit ecclesia, was presented in the Holy See Press Office. Addressed to Bishops of the Church and meant to “encourage a fruitful and ordered participation of the new groups in the communion and the mission of the Church”, the letter presents some key elements both of the doctrine of charisms found in the New Testament and of Magisterial reflection on the reality of movements and church groups. Thus, based upon certain principles of systematic theology, the letter identifies elements of both the hierarchical and charismatic gifts alongside some criteria for the discernment of the new ecclesial groups.
