For the care of creation
· The Pope's Video Message ·
A call to commit to the care of creation, a gift freely-given, to be cultivated and protected for future generations: this was the content of the video message Pope Francis sent out to accompany his universal prayer intention for the month of February. Read in Spanish and translated into 10 languages, the papal message was published on the website of the Apostleship of Prayer (www.apmej.org; thepopevideo.org).
“Believers and unbelievers agree,” Francis begins over a slideshow of images depicting the beauty of creation, “ that the earth is our common heritage, the fruits of which should benefit everyone”. However, the Pope asks, “what is happening in the world we live in?”; and the images begin to show how our environment is neglected. “The relationship between poverty and the fragility of the planet,” he warns, “requires another way of managing the economy and measuring progress, conceiving a new way of living”. Because, “we need a change that unites us all”. As the images turn to those of hope in mankind, the Holy Father says that “ free from the slavery of consumerism,” together we will be capable of “caring for our common home”.
