Building peace for tomorrow

· Pope Francis to the community of Sri Lanka in Italy ·

There is no other path than that of building peace for tomorrow. Thus it is necessary to work with our adversaries of yesterday. Pope Francis said this to the member of the community of Sri Lanka in Italy on Saturday morning, 8 February. “Your homeland”, the Pontiff said, “is called the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, on account of its natural beauty and its shape. They say that the pearl is formed from the tears of the oyster. Unfortunately, many tears have been shed in recent years, on account of the internal conflict which caused so many victims and so much damage”. He thus assured them of his prayers to the Lord for peace. He continued that despite the wounds caused in recent years due to misunderstanding and violence, the only way to build a future of peace and hope is through the path of reconciliation.

The Holy Father also welcomed the invitation of Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don, Archbishop of Colombo, to visit their country, and expressed his belief that the Lord would give him the grace to make such a visit.
