And recalls that the ‘Forgiveness of Assisi’ calls us to approach confession without fear
With “a powerful summons to draw close to the Lord in the Sacrament of Mercy and also in receiving Communion”, Pope Francis recalled the “Forgiveness of Assisi”, the Portiuncula Indulgence which is celebrated each year on 1 and 2 August. After reciting the Angelus on Sunday, 2 August, the Pontiff pointed out that there are “people who are afraid to go to Confession, forgetting that there we do not meet a strict judge, but the immensely merciful Father”.
The Holy Father had previously commented on the day’s Gospel, which continued the Sixth Chapter of John. “After the multiplication of the loaves”, he said, “the people went in search of Jesus and finally found him in Capernaum”. But those people, he added, “followed him for the material bread which had placated their hunger the previous day”, but “they did not understand that that bread, broken for so many, for the multitude, was the expression of the love of Jesus himself”. In other words, “they gave more meaning to that bread than to its donor”. Therefore, Francis explained, “before this spiritual blindness, Jesus emphasizes the necessity of going beyond the gift, and discovering, knowing the donor. God himself is both the gift and the giver. Thus from that bread, from that gesture, the people can find He who gives it, who is God”. This is an invitation, said Pope Francis, “to be open to a perspective which is not only that of the daily concerns of eating, of clothing, of success, of career”. In fact, “Jesus speaks of another food. He speaks of a food which is incorruptible and which is good to seek and gather”. Jesus wants us to “understand that, in addition to physical hunger man carries within him another hunger … a more important hunger”. It is a “hunger for life” and “for eternity”, which “he alone can satisfy”.
